If you’re still wearing studs you’re over. Studs are officially out. Ear cuffs, tribal and lobe-hugging creations are so in right now they may as well be Kylie Jenner’s lips. Remember those days in P.E when you had to cover your earrings with microporous tape so that some idiot didn’t catch your earring and yank it out (and there was always some rumour about some kid in another school who it happened to)? Well, microporous tape wouldn’t have had a chance against these guys I’m going to show you, not that you’d be wearing these earrings in primary school but you get what I’m saying.
3 Types of Earrings You Never Knew Existed
1. The ‘Mise en Dior’ Tribal Earrings
For those of us with an inner Maasai warrior, not that I’ve ever seen a Maasai warrior in Dior earrings. These babes are like a mother-baby duo, there’s a little one and a big one. You can switch these out if you want, changing which size is at the front or employing one of your now un-trendy studs to switch out the baby sphere or mixing colours if you have another tribal pair – they’re customisable, I like that. They usually work with the little at the front and the big at the back, and because they’re a little heavy, the big one weighs down a bit making an appearance from the front. As far as I remember, Dior pioneered these (or the Maasai) but there’s a few high street stores adopting this style.
Available from Dior Stores or Dior Online from £260
2. The Ear Cuff/Stud Combo
The only acceptable way to wear studs is when they’re paired with a magnificent ear cuff on the other ear. It’s all fun and games to rock two ear cuffs with an up-do/braid to an event but on a day-to-day basis this could be a bit much. That’s when the mullet of earrings comes in (business in the right ear, party in the left…duh). There are loads of ear cuffs going around so you can create your own combo if you’re feeling creative, or leave it to the professionals like Ryan Storer and get a pre-curated pairing.
Ryan Storer is available from Browns Fashion, Swarovski Ear Cuff, £425
3. The Lobe Huggers
These are studs on steroids. They’re studs but they come with a clique and although there’s the one ring leader sitting at the top, through your ear hole, his little friends lined up like Moulin Rouge dancers hug your ear lobe adding extra sparkle to your usual single stud glimmer. If single studs are Michelle, lobe-hugging earrings are Beyoncé. These Yvonne Leons are sure to provide lots of glitter and sparkle ’cause they’re real diamonds..
Yvonne Leon is available from Browns Fashion.
