The Power of the T-Shirt

Yes, the t-shirt. The super simple wardrobe staple that you casually overlook and shove to the side of your drawer in order to find a more “exciting” piece of clothing when you dress for a night out, or for a dinner, or for work. The t-shirt that you might wear to the gym or to sit around at home in and eat your feelings, or when you can’t think of anything else to wear. The t-shirt is the underdog, the Eminem (circa 8 Mile) of clothes, the silent superhero just waiting to be released, but when you’ve finished reading this post you will look at your tees differently. By the end of this post your tees will be your homies, your Remy Boyz, your YMCMB (minus Birdman), your Roc Nation. You will treasure them and protect them from those bitches more commonly known as moths and become a connoisseur of the t-shirts.

However, you can’t expect to buy some 2-bit 2 pack of white crew neck t-shirts and expect a blessing from the fashion Gods, that’s not how it works. You have to be discerning with your t-shirt choices – I’m not saying you have to buy a Commes des Garçons t-shirt and spend a ridiculous amount of money (don’t talk to me about Commes) but expect to look for quality and fit. And as best as you can, try to steer out of your comfort zone colour-wise (I, too am guilty of loving black, white and grey a little too much and therefore discriminating the other t-shirt colours, but I categorically shall not wear a bright red one. It doesn’t look good on me, apart from if it’s Oxblood).

In case you’re still struggling with this concept and you need a little help with how to wear a t-shirt as a legitimate piece of stylish clothing I’ve gone ahead and created some looks that might spark a fire of inspiration within you – I know, I’m like your fashion fairy Godmother, but not old…
