The Oscars of fashion rolled out the red carpet on Monday night getting me sweating with excitement as to who will be wearing what and who killed it. Much to my dismay, Princess RiRi was on tour and didn’t sashay her way down the carpet but whilst I daydream about what RiRi would have worn, a few celebrities held it down for her and slayed. The theme for this year’s Met Ball was Manus x Machina: Fashion in an age of technology, so think a lot of silver. In my best/worst dressed game, non-existent negative points have been assigned to those who didn’t adhere to the theme but extra props to those who didn’t go with the theme but still killed it. Here we go, the Met Gala 2016 best dressed…and worst…
Met Gala 2016 Best Dressed
Kim Kardashian & Kanye West
A few couples killed it on the carpet this year and of course Kimye didn’t disappoint. Kim was draped in a very knight-themed Balmain dress with a popped Jolie leg and futuristic-looking eyebrows. Kanye followed suit with the futuristic facial features turning up in “wolf” eyes and a Swarovski-d to hell denim jacket. They looked pretty sick together.
Beyoncé (minus Jay-Z)
Although B’s makeup was questionable (Google some close ups) I’m loving the concept of the dress – I don’t know but there’s something futuristic about latex, no? It was Givenchy and it was embellished with pearls and her body looked incredible.
Gigi Hadid & Zayn Malik
Ok so usually with celebrity couples (with the exception of Kimye) the guy has a tendency to wear something sort of, with lack of a nicer word, boring and predictable…ooh look another damn suit. Zayn arguably killed this one more than Gigi with the knight-looking/robotic arms, which were everything. Gigi’s dress was cool and everything, I wish the sequinned areas were metal to match Zayn, but they’re both beautiful so whatever.
Even with that slightly odd haircut she kills it, goddamn. I love the nude look and although an asymmetric sleeve can really piss on an outfit, this one works so beautifully and seamlessly with the look.
Bella Hadid & The Weeknd
Bella, as far as I’m concerned, wasn’t dressed to the theme but damn you can get away with it if you slay that carpet enough and she left it lifeless. The glorious huge train of the dress and thigh high slit with her dark hair was giving me some Angelina Jolie realness and I was all over it. Sidenote I’m dying over the pairing of an over the knee boot with the high leg slit – perfect.
I’m bias because Gaga is the HBIC (head bitch in charge), and although initially I wasn’t sure about the look as I’ve only just grown accustomed to Gaga’s more toned-down sophisticated look but she’s bang on the theme in Versace laser-cut leather. Also her hair and make up is magnificent. Let’s be honest, if anyone could wear this at the Met and kill it, it’s Gaga.
Dripping in Balmain, in such a heavily embellished dress that it left her with some battle wounds by the end of the night, with the most complimentary hair cut for the dress little Ky-Jen left me practically with a tear in my eye. I can’t. It’s amazing.
Looking like Cinderella, her dress was fitted with fibre optics and lit up in the dark. Theme? Nailed.
Poppy brought it to the Met Ball. Heavily embellished and probably making a bit of a racket when she moved (always the sign of a good dress), she brought that cold, eat-your-heart-out, futuristic Queen look and I am all over it.
Met Gala 2016 Worst Dressed
Kristen baffles me as she seems to have done it again. She seems to have managed, where I previously thought it was impossible, to make something Chanel look bad. First of all, how is this the theme? Your silver eyeshadow doesn’t fool me, and I hate your shoes.
They always say with siblings you never get two alike, this has never proved more true with the Knowles sisters as we have Beyoncé in best dressed and Solange… Again, how is this the theme? But also, WHAT is this!? I can’t deal with so many aspects of this – the pleated …dress? The latex thigh-highs with the attachments (I don’t know what they’re called) to put under your heel. Please no.
This outfit just proves that it’s about time she just rolled into a coffin. There is an age limit on clothes and Madonna is about 40 years past the age limit of this outfit. Please stop, if anything to save your children the embarrassment.
Miranda, how did you think this two-piece was Met Gala-appropriate? I’m sure this isn’t your first time, you knew that this was the fashion event if the year and you/your stylists picked that!? *smh*
Unfortunately I think the designer ran out of funding before being able to finish this dress as there’s a very obvious lack of embellishment on Rachel’s lower half.
Nicki, I love you, you know that, but this outfit…for lack of a better word looks tacky. Maybe without those irrelevant buckles it would have worked but I just can’t help but look at those and think of a cheap belt from Claire’s accessories I would have been drawn to as an 8 year old (before my fashion epiphany).
*sigh*…Grimes looks like she was craving some Haribo from the local shop in a rush and so threw on whatever was closest before heading out of the door. However, she’s at the met ball and situations like this make me want to cry.
Whose outfit did you love at the Met Ball and whose were you not a fan of?
